Getting to Know Me

The idea for this little montage comes from a certain Swedish lady

  • picture of you in your room.
My old Kingston room. My last year of university I lived in a very sketchy house and my room was a structurally unsound addition that appeared to be randomly tacked onto the top of my house. The room slanted to the left and would move just a little too much if it was windy outside.

  • A picture of you very drunk.

Mexico. I ended up jumping in a car with a bunch of lovely Mexican girls and driving off to a lady bar. I knew I had to get home when I couldn't properly say my name.

  • The youngest picture you can find of yourself in digital form.

  • A picture of you in one of your favourite outfits.

I own and love quite a few dresses, in fact I may even have named a few ... however, when it comes down to it, it really doesn't matter what's on top so long as I've got my Texans on my feet.

  • A picture of you making a goofy face at the camera.

Wine & Sleaze. This photo got it's own page in my university's yearbook.

  • A picture you miiiiiight have edited to make yourself more attractive.

  • A picture of a night you regret.

  • A picture of you truly being yourself.

  • The most recent picture of you.

  • A picture of you being ridiculous.

  • A picture of a time in your life that’s over, but you wish it wasn’t.

I miss all going on all my solo weekend trips. No wonder Air Canada is losing money.

  • A picture of a time in your life that’s over, and you couldn’t be more thankful that it is.
I am not a trigger happy girl. This was a one time only Portland affair.

  • A picture of you when you were anything but happy.

  • A picture of you that you had no idea was being taken.

  • A picture that describes how you’d like to spend every day.

Guacamole + Swedish boys + NYC + special treats + fire breathing-pole-dancing-bartenders + dancing

  • A picture of a time when everything was changing.

Last night in Montreal before I moved away to travel across the USA.
I rhyme good. =)

  • A picture that makes your heart hurt.

Montreal, I'm really sorry. It's all my fault. Really, it's me, not you.

  • A picture that makes your heart smile.
New Orleans - always amazing times - always the most amazing people.

OhMyGodohmygodOhMyGodohmygodOHMYGOD

Elisa Nalin - I envy you.

When One is Unemployed ..

... one tends to watch too much Tv .... which really isn't quite so bad now that the internet, bless its soul, lets you watch whatever you want with no commercials. My Top 5 recommendations?

5.

Freaks & Geeks. I know cute girls run around wearing t-shirts that read "Talk geeky to me" and blah, blah, blah - and they are completely missing the point. If you were a dork back in high school it was painful. This show captures that - and Seth Rogen when he, and I adore the man, couldn't act. But that's ok because of his little gems like "she's packing the gun and the holster" line.
4.
True Blood.
Fuck Edward Cohen. Vampires, especially those of the evil Swedish persuasion, are sexy.

3. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Just watch it and you will understand.

2. My guilty of guilty pleasures - a show revolving around two British gardners who just happen to always be fixing up gardens where people just happened to be murdered. Chances are your granny and I enjoy this show for all the same reasons.

1. Mad Men
There are 2 reasons to watch this show.

a. Joan Holloway (please excuse the title of this video, it's not mine)
b. Don Draper

I can see clearly now ...

I got me some fancy new specs

Where have you been lately?

The first ocean my toes almost touched - the Atlantic in Charleston, South Carolina

Much too late and much too much Southern Comfort with some Swedish gentlemen on South Beach

Arizona ... how I surprisingly ended up ♥'ing thee>

I want to walk your dog

I like to walk .... and I would rather be walking with your dog ... especially if he/she is anything like Chutney up there.

I generally like my life ....

The Boys

I met Linus and Oscar the first night of my trip .... and well ... let's just say a girl couldn't ask for better travelin' partners in crime.

Aboard Elvis' plane.

Somewhere in the mighty state of Mississippi.

NOLA

Brooklyn .... chilly, chilly Brooklyn.

In the County ...

When you were 16 did you do doughnuts in empty lots only to find black ice?
Did you decide you should ask the guy who lives next door to that empty lot if you could use some of his water to help feed the ice so you could turn it into a rink for you and your buddies?
Did you shovel the snow, spray the water, and then a few days later come back at night with the guys and some flood lights to play a little puck?
That's how we do in Port Elgin.
It's the county way.

A few months ago a certain someone I know put her engagement photos up on the internet, and I, being the terrible person that I am, couldn't stop laughing at how terrible they were. Not that I've ever been engaged, or come anywhere close to it, but I imagine the point of engagement photos are to show the world how much you and your special someone are in love, and how much everyone else is not. Needless to say, her photos did not accomplish this, instead
they looked like a mix between the cover of a soft-rock compilation album, and an American Eagle ad. Nothing says I love you more than boring monotony.
And then I saw these
These people I am jealous of.

I am Canadian.

I know talking about the weather isn't always the most exciting thing in the world, usually it's a topic reserved for strangers and little known acquaintances, but I'm from Canada and that's how we roll in the great White North, so, you want to hear something fun?

Josh digging us out

My fair home of Bruce County was recently hit with 15cm of snow - and the best part is that all of that snow came down between midnight and morning - last night. Last night when my brothers and I were driving home from Ottawa. Last night when they decided the roads were so bad they closed them all down and pulled all the snow ploughs off the roads. Oh, and did I mention that the 15 cm was in addition to the unholy amount of snow that fell during the day? So my brothers and I had been on the road for 5 1/2 hours with no problems when we hit the storm - or rather the storm smacked into us. Have you ever driven in a serious snowstorm? Have you ever driven 20 km/hr because you can't see the line in the middle of the road, or driven over a snow drift that fights back and throws up a blinding amount of snow at your windshield making everything go eerily black? Have you ever had the pleasure of having your car stuck in the middle of the highway in snow that goes up to your knees? You know how you get out of that? Nice Bruce County strangers show up and shackle your car to their truck and drag you out ... or if it isn't quite so bad you get out and push as hard as you can. So after being caught in the snow twice, driving with the windows down to judge if we were in the middle of the road because good luck with those mean snow banks we finally gave up in Walkerton (about 50km from home) .... we'd had enough .... and ... well we had no choice because every road out of town was closed. "Alright" we thought "we'll just find a motel and some pizza, go to bed and in the morning get the hell out of dodge" ... only problem was that all 2 of the town's motels were fully booked up - which left us with one option - the option every Canadian knows always exists - Tim Hortons. While my brothers stayed in the car and drank their beers I sat inside the Walkerton Tim Hortons from 11:30pm - 5am drinking chocolate milk with the waitresses.

When we finally ventured back onto the highway we were lucky enough to end up being a snow plough ... the first plough to make it out since the storm hit. How do I know this? Time Hortons. You don't set out anywhere in Canada at such an ungodly hour to battle the elements without a double double close at hand http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Double-Double .. and the nice ladies at the Tim Horton's told me "Joe's back on the road" right after they‘d served him.

We followed the eerie red lights of the enormous truck as it effortlessly brushed the snow out of its way stopping every so often to slowly backed up and clear another side for oncoming traffic, or to make sure it didn't crush the barely visible cars hidden under piles of snow in the ditch ... but our luck ran out again in Paisley as "Joe" turned around and began to retrace his steeps and we found ourselves stranded yet again in a much smaller town, a town so small it didn’t have a Tim Hortons.

I’m not sure if lucky is the proper term to use here, but the great thing about being from a small town is you know a lot of people in your town and most of the surrounding towns as well. A good friend, the kind that wouldn’t kill you for showing up at 6am with your two brothers, recently moved to Paisley so we stopped by her house.

Awkward does not begin to describe the next few hours. Unknown to me, the wonderful friend had left the province, and in her place was someone I barely knew and her boyfriend. Having nowhere to go, we had no choice so me and the boys took the couch, while a practical strangers not so quietly cuddled up on the other side. Two hours later I awoke with a kink in my neck and absolute certainty we had to get out of there right away. This time we had the sun on our side, road closures be damned we sped past the big "closed road", an idle threat as miraculously the road had been cleaned, and finally made it home - 17 hours after we left Ottawa.

Canada, I hate you.

An Airplane over a Bog

As you may have gathered from the past few posts ...  I am alive! Ms. Rubysuitcase and I crossed America and lived to tell the tale. As expected I had an amazing time is quirky Savannah, was a little frightened during the gorgeous ocean drive to Key West, fell in love with New Orleans all over again, bought the red cowboy boots in Austin, stumbled around with zombies in Tucson, was in total awe of the Grand Canyon, was the angel among devils in Las Vegas, should have gotten a tattoo in San Diego, will not tell you what I did in Tijuana, and got a nasty case of bed bugs in West Hollywood. Now that I'm home and things have died down a bit I'm prone to some nasty cases of nostalgia and start practically every sentence with "This one time in [insert city name]" so much so that most people are getting tired of me.
But you want a hear a story .... don't you?

Unlike some rather lovely boys I knew who were stuck riding the Greyhound for 22 hours between Miami and New Orleans, I had a plane ticket (a plane ticket that was cheaper than their bus ticket). Little Ms.Know-it-all that I am I knew that neither the state of Mississippi or Alabama had any hostels, which sadly meant I had to skip them because who wants to be couped up in a cheap motel all by themself for so long? So when the day came I hopped on my plane and off it went up into the sky and it didn't come back down until NOLA was nearby.
I spent the entire flight getting more and more excited as my plane got closer and closer to its destination and then as we started our descent I suddenly had a thought - I had had an amazing time in New Orleans last year ... would I be spending this week here chasing last year's ghosts trying to have as much fun as they did?

There was no reason to worry. As soon as I arrived at the hostel I ran into the Swedish boys I'd met in Charleston and Miami, and then I ran into Nora who I'd met the last time I was in NOLA and who was positively convinced we needed to go see a band that night. Two fabulous Estonian girls and an extra Swed rounded out our pose and we headed out.

After much dancing, drinking, and more dancing I have to admit my memory of the night is a bit fuzzy, but it was exactly what you want from any city - great music, cheap drinks, and fabulous people .

A Short List of Things You Should Probably Know About the Greyhound

Not to brag, but I’m sort of a big deal when it comes to the Greyhound. No I’m not the niece of the guy that owns it, nor do I have an in with the baggage guys to ensure that the bags belonging to the annoying woman who’s been yelling at her cell phone since Lafayette disappear, but as a redhead who has ridden the Greyhound from South Carolina all the way across this country to sunny California, I think I’ve learned a thing or two about the "dirty dog".

  1. The bus is NEVER ontime, but you should be. Lining up early means you’ll avoid sitting next to the old guy with the black lung who will be coughing up nastiness for most of the next 12 hours.

  2. Bring a sweater. There is no such thing as too much air conditioning in Florida.

  3. People will try to smoke on the bus. They are stupid. Do not smoke on the bus the driver will literally kick you to the curb.
  4. Buses are much nicer in the North than in the South. Buses are sent to Louisiana to die.
  5. WATCH YOUR BAG. When you switch buses make sure your bag switches buses as well. Your driver may say it's coming with you, but unless you see it get shoved under your bus don't believe anyone.

You want a trip? I'll give you a trip!

Dearest Internet Spooks and Shadowy Figures,

It's that time of year again when Andrea says good bye to all the lovely people she's met, throws her most beloved possessions into some boxes that will be sent home to join last year's pile of beloved boxes stacked away in her parents’ garage, and hop on a plane destined for some strange far away land. And although the plane ride won't be as long as the last, the finish line is a bit farther away, about 3,821 miles away. "Why?" you may ask, and to that I must put a better question, “Why not?” I have done the responsible adult thing for about a year and I think I've sold enough of my soul for the time being to merit a little get away. George Bernard Shaw said that "Youth is wasted on the young" and I hate it when old white men are right, so with spite in my heart and a quarter century birthday looming over my head I'm hitting the road.

And so ...... next week yours truly will board a plane in Buffalo with her sights and red shoes set to take on Charleston, South Carolina. If the Great Beings in the sky and weather permit I'll make it down to Savannah in time for my birthday, an epic day that will be drenched in as many mint juleps and Jack Daniels as a girl from Bruce County can hold ... then once the hang over subsides I'll drag myself onto an overnight bus to Miami and maybe even out to the Keys. Eventually Florida's shinny veneer of sunshine, messy crab shacks, and debaucherous nights will fade a way and when I wake to find that I've had my fill of crusty tanned geriatrics I'll fly away to see what Gustav has left behind of my beloved New Orleans. A couple bowls of gumbo, 1$ street beers, and a cemetery or two later it's over to Texas to see some old friends and maybe some new (ideally red cowboy boots or tall dark cowboys please), and then I'll keep on going until Obama wins the election, I've seen the showgirls in Vegas, and finally until I can dip my toes in the waters of the Western coast - kids, Red's going to Hollywood.

Am I crazy?

I'll see you on the road.

http://www.theselby.com/
Whenever I poke around this site it makes me want to settle down long enough to setup a fabulous, yet simple home. I think my fictional abode would look something like a cross between Marie Antoinette's farmhouse, but inhabited by your crazy brother.
